๐Ÿ”ต What is ฯ€ โ€” and where does it come from?

ฯ€ (pi) is not just a button on your calculator. It is a ratio that exists in every circle ever drawn. If you measure the circumference of any circle and divide it by its diameter, you always get the same answer: ฯ€ = 3.14159โ€ฆ No matter the size.

ฯ€ = C รท d โ€” always Bigger diameter โ†’ bigger circumference The ratio never changes Irrational โ€” never ends, never repeats

๐Ÿ“ The Rules

ฯ€ = C รท d โ€” always
This ratio is the same for every circle, no matter the size.
ฯ€ โ‰ˆ 3.14159โ€ฆ
An irrational number โ€” its decimal never ends or repeats.

Keep ฯ€ exact through your working; round only the final answer.

๐Ÿ“– Key Vocabulary

ฯ€ (pi) โ€” the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
Diameter โ€” the distance straight across a circle through its centre.
Radius โ€” the distance from the centre to the edge; half the diameter.
Irrational number โ€” a number whose decimal expansion never ends or repeats.

๐ŸŽฏ Drag the diameter โ€” watch the ratio Cรทd stay at ฯ€

ℹ️ How to use: Drag the slider to change the circle diameter. Watch the circumference bar below grow and see how C ÷ d always equals π ≈ 3.1416, no matter what size the circle is.

Circumference

The circumference is the distance all the way around a circle. Two equivalent formulas โ€” use whichever matches what you're given.

๐Ÿ“ The Rules

C = ฯ€d
Use directly if you're given the diameter.
C = 2ฯ€r
Use directly if you're given the radius.
check your units
Circumference is a length โ€” mm, cm or m, never squared.

๐Ÿ“– Key Vocabulary

Circumference โ€” the distance all the way around a circle.
Diameter โ€” the full width of a circle through its centre.
Radius โ€” half the diameter, from centre to edge.
C = ฯ€d = 2ฯ€r   where d = diameter, r = radius. Both give the same answer since d = 2r.

๐ŸŽฏ Change the diameter โ€” watch the circumference grow proportionally

Area of a Circle

The area of a circle is ฯ€rยฒ. This comes from rearranging sectors of the circle into a rectangle โ€” a beautiful geometric proof.

๐Ÿ“ The Rules

A = ฯ€rยฒ
Square the radius first, then multiply by ฯ€.
given diameter? halve it first
r = d/2 before you square โ€” a common error is squaring the diameter directly.
area units are squared
mmยฒ, cmยฒ or mยฒ โ€” never a plain length unit.

๐Ÿ“– Key Vocabulary

Area โ€” the amount of surface enclosed by the circle.
Radius โ€” the distance from the centre to the edge of the circle.
Squared โ€” multiplied by itself, e.g. rยฒ = r ร— r.
A = ฯ€rยฒ   where r = radius. If given diameter: r = d/2, so A = ฯ€(d/2)ยฒ = ฯ€dยฒ/4

Applications

Where this topic is used in engineering, manufacturing, maintenance and daily life.

๐Ÿ“– Key Vocabulary

Tooth spacing โ€” the fixed distance between gear teeth, set by the gear's circumference.
Cross-sectional area โ€” the area of a circular slice through a pipe, rod or cable.
Tolerance โ€” the allowed variation in a measured dimension.

Engineering Applications

Circles and cylinders are everywhere in engineering. These are the most tested contexts in Level 3 assessments.

๐Ÿ“ The Rules

flow โˆ rยฒ
Cross-sectional area scales with the square of the radius โ€” doubling r quadruples flow.
match the formula to the shape
Check whether the problem needs a length (circumference), an area, or a volume.
keep exact ฯ€ through working
Round only the final answer to the accuracy the problem asks for.

๐Ÿ“– Key Vocabulary

Cross-sectional area โ€” the area of a slice cut perpendicular to a pipe or shaft's length.
Flow rate โ€” the volume of fluid passing a point per unit time.
Proportional (โˆ) โ€” one quantity changes in direct relation to another, e.g. flow โˆ rยฒ.

๐Ÿ”ฉ Pipe Flow โ€” Cross-Sectional Area

The flow rate through a pipe depends on its cross-sectional area A = ฯ€rยฒ. Doubling the radius quadruples the flow.

Pipe bore (internal diameter) = 50mm
r = 25mm
A = ฯ€ร—25ยฒ = 625ฯ€ = 1963 mmยฒ

โš™๏ธ Gear Wheel โ€” Pitch Circle Circumference

Gears are sized by their Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD). The circumference of the PCD ร— number of teeth gives tooth pitch.

Gear: 40 teeth, PCD = 160mm
Circumference = ฯ€ร—160 = 502.7mm
Tooth pitch = 502.7/40 = 12.57mm

Module m = PCD/teeth = 160/40 = 4

Steel at 15 kg/mยฒ: 36.19ร—15 = 542.9 kg

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Concrete Column โ€” Circular Section

Structural columns are often circular. Area gives load capacity; volume gives concrete quantity.

Column: d=400mm, height=3.5m
r = 200mm = 0.2m

Cross-section area:
A = ฯ€ร—0.2ยฒ = 0.04ฯ€ = 0.1257 mยฒ

Volume of concrete:
V = Aร—h = 0.1257ร—3.5 = 0.440 mยณ

At 2400 kg/mยณ: mass = 0.440ร—2400

๐Ÿ”ง Turned Component โ€” Lathe Material Removal

Turning reduces a circular bar's diameter. The material removed is the difference between two circular areas multiplied by the length.

Bar: original d=80mm, turned to d=72mm
rโ‚=40mm, rโ‚‚=36mm, length=200mm

Area removed = ฯ€(rโ‚ยฒโˆ’rโ‚‚ยฒ)
= ฯ€(1600โˆ’1296) = 304ฯ€ = 955 mmยฒ

Volume removed = 955ร—200 = 191,000 mmยณ
= 191 cmยณ

Steel density 7.85g/cmยณ:
Mass removed = 191ร—7.85 = 1499g โ‰ˆ 1.5kg

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Heat Exchanger โ€” Tube Surface Area

Heat transfer depends on surface area. For a bank of tubes, total area = circumference ร— length ร— number of tubes.

Tube: OD=25mm, length=1.5m, qty=40

Surface area per tube:
SA = ฯ€dL = ฯ€ร—0.025ร—1.5 = 0.1178 mยฒ

Total area = 40ร—0.1178 = 4.71 mยฒ

Heat transfer: Q = Uร—Aร—ฮ”T
U=500 W/mยฒK, ฮ”T=30ยฐC:
Q = 500ร—4.71ร—30 = 70,650 W
