Simplifying means writing a fraction in its lowest form — the same value, but with smaller, cleaner numbers. Like tidying your desk — nothing changes, it just looks much neater!

💡 Both bars are identical in length. 6/8 and 3/4 hold exactly the same amount — the pieces are just bigger in 3/4. Simplifying just uses fewer, larger pieces.

Why Simplify?3 good reasons
  1. Clearer to read — "3/4 of a tank" is much easier than "18/24 of a tank"
  2. Fewer errors — small numbers are simpler to multiply and divide
  3. Exams require it — T Level questions say "give your answer in its simplest form" and marks are lost if you don't
📌 In engineering, gear ratios, mix ratios and tolerances are always in simplified form. 3:4 is much more useful on a blueprint than 36:48!
What counts as "simplest form"?

A fraction is in its simplest form when no whole number (other than 1) divides evenly into both the top and bottom.

Ask: does any number other than 1 divide into BOTH?

🍕 Think of a pizza — cutting it into 12 slices and eating 8, or cutting into 3 slices and eating 2, gives you the same amount of pizza. 2/3 is just the simplest way to describe it.

Finding the HCF

The HCF (Highest Common Factor) is the biggest whole number that divides exactly into both the top and bottom numbers. Find it, divide both by it — done in one step!

Factors are all whole numbers that divide into a number exactly (no remainder).

Factors of 12:   1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
Factors of 18:   1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
Common factors (in both):   1, 2, 3, 6

    Step-by-Step Method

    Follow this process every time. Two methods — use whichever is faster for the numbers in front of you.

    Method A — HCFSimplify in ONE step (most efficient)
    1. Write out all factors of the numerator (top number)
    2. Write out all factors of the denominator (bottom number)
    3. Identify the HCF — the largest number in both lists
    4. Divide BOTH numerator and denominator by the HCF
    5. Check: HCF of the new fraction = 1? If yes → done ✅

    Method B — Keep HalvingGreat when both numbers are even
    1. Are both numbers even? → divide both by 2
    2. Still both even? → divide by 2 again. Repeat.
    3. When one becomes odd → stop halving. Try dividing by 3, 5, 7…
    4. When nothing divides both evenly → you're in simplest form ✅

    ⚠️ Never divide just one number. You must always divide BOTH top AND bottom by the same amount, otherwise the fraction's value changes and your answer is wrong.
    Final check: after simplifying, confirm the HCF of your new top and bottom = 1. If it is, you're done. If not, keep going!

    Example 1 — Simplify 18/24
    Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
    Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
    HCF: 6 — highest number in both lists
    Divide top: 18 ÷ 6 = 3
    Divide bottom: 24 ÷ 6 = 4

    Check even?: 45 is ODD — can't halve. Try other factors.
    Try ÷ 5: 45÷5=9, 60÷5=12 → 9/12

    Mistakes to Avoid

    These cost marks in the T Level exam. Recognise them now so you never make them.

    Mistake 1Dividing only ONE side
    ❌ 12/20 → divide top only → 3/20
    The value changes completely — 3/20 ≠ 12/20
    ✅ Always divide BOTH: 12÷4=3 and 20÷4=5 → 3/5
    Think of it like a see-saw — what you do to one side, you MUST do to the other to keep it balanced.
    Mistake 2Stopping too early
    ❌ 24/36 ÷ 2 = 12/18 → "done"
    12/18 can still be simplified — you stopped too soon!
    ✅ Always verify: HCF(12,18)=6 → still not done.
    24/36 → 12/18 → 6/9 → 2/3
    Always check the final fraction — HCF should be 1 before you stop.
    Mistake 3Dividing by a non-factor
    ❌ 9/15 ÷ 2 = 4.5/7.5
    2 doesn't divide into 9 — you get decimals, which is wrong!
    ✅ Always check the number divides EXACTLY.
    9/15: try 3 → 9÷3=3, 15÷3=5 → 3/5
    Mistake 4n/n = 0 (wrong!)
    ❌ 8/8 → "top minus bottom = 0"
    This is completely wrong!
    ✅ Any fraction where top = bottom = 1
    8/8 = 8÷8 = 1 whole
    A fraction where top equals bottom is always equal to 1, not 0.

    Gear ratios are always written simplified so engineers can read them instantly on a blueprint.

    Drive gear: 40 teeth   Output: 60 teeth
    Ratio = 40/60 → HCF=20 → 2/3
    Meaning: 3 input turns = 2 output turns

    📏 Manufacturing Tolerances

    Tolerances express acceptable variation as a simplified fraction of the dimension.

    Shaft: 40mm ± tolerance of 3mm in 12mm
    Tolerance fraction: 3/12 → HCF=3 → 1/4
    Allowed variation = one quarter of dimension

    🧪 Mix Ratios

    Welding gas, epoxy, concrete — all mixing ratios are written in simplest form.

    Epoxy: 10ml resin + 4ml hardener
    Fraction = 10/14 → HCF=2 → 5/7
    Mix ratio resin:hardener = 5:2

    📐 Scale Drawings

    Blueprint scales use simplified fractions. 2/100 on a drawing = 1/50 in simplest form.

    Scale 2/100 → HCF=2 → 1/50
    Drawing: 6cm → Real: 6×50 = 300cm = 3m

    Problem: A hydraulic cylinder exerts 1260N over a piston of area 1680mm². Express the pressure as a simplified fraction (N/mm²), then as a decimal.
